Gas Pipeline Extension

Environmental Permitting for Pipeline Extension

Client

National Grid

Location

Southold, NY

Key Elements

  • Environmental Permitting
  • Agency Coordination
  • Stormwater Planning
  • SWPPP Construction Inspections

GEI was retained by National Grid to oversee the environmental permitting for their Cutchogue to Southold Gas Distribution Pipeline Extension Project.

For this linear utility project, the existing gas main was extended 26,000 feet along public roadways and right-of ways. GEI coordinated with local and state agencies regarding wetland and stormwater permitting requirements. GEI prepared a Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) as part of the State Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (SPDES) General Permit for Stormwater Discharges from Construction Activity (GO-0-10-001).

Project design and construction methodology was engineered to minimize the area of disturbance. Stabilization measures were implemented immediately following installation to limit adverse conditions that could result in sediment migration and erosion from the project site.

GEI’s multiple Qualified SWPPP Inspectors provided weekly inspections of construction activities in conformance with the SWPPP and General Permit. GEI coordinated SWPPP updates with the Contractor and Client.
